FAQs about Teaching for VIPKID
What exactly do you do as a teacher with VIPKID?
As a VIPKID teacher you teach English to Chinese students in one-on-one online classes. Classes are 25 minutes in length, allowing you to be able to teach two classes an hour.
What are the requirements for getting hired?
To be considered as a potential teacher with VIPKID you need:
- a bachelor’s degree
- at least one year of experience teaching and/or working with kids
Your experience working with kids doesn’t have to be a formal job. It can include homeschooling, teaching Sunday school at your church, coaching, tutoring, etc.
How long does the application and hiring process take?
It really depends on how fast you complete each step! From filling out my preliminary application to signing my contract it took about three weeks, but you could likely finish the process in half the time if you needed to.
Do you have to work the same hours every week?
No! One of the reasons that teaching with VIPKID is such a great job is because the hours you work are completely up to you! You open teaching slots for the times when you are available, and those are the only times that students can book.
Do you have to teach in the middle of the night?
No! I currently teach from 6-7 AM every weekday morning, plus an hour or two on Friday nights. It works so well for me.
However, there are a lot of teachers who’ve chosen to make VIPKID their full time job and regularly teach all night or in the very early morning hours. It’s totally up to you what you want to do.
What is the starting pay?
The base pay for teaching for VIPKID is $7-$9 per 25 minute class, so that ends up being $14-$18 an hour. Then, if you are on time for class (which you should be haha) you get an extra dollar per class. And finally, if you teach at least 45 classes a month you receive an extra dollar per class.
So that makes the total hourly pay for teaching for VIPKID $18-$22 an hour. Pretty sweet pay for teaching from the comfort of your own home!
Do you have to prepare lesson plans?
No! (Yay!) VIPKID provides all the lessons. As a teacher, I just review the teaching slides ahead of time and gather any props that may be helpful for the lesson.
What equipment do you need?
You will need a computer with a web cam (a laptop with a touchscreen is super nice but not necessary), a headset, and reliable internet. You also need good lighting (I use an extra lamp that we picked up at a thrift store), something for a background, and some props.
How do taxes work?
During the hiring process you will fill out a W-9. When tax time comes around you will need to report your income and pay taxes on it. VIPKID usually recommends putting aside 30% for taxes just to be safe.
Is VIPKID a multi-level marketing company?
No!! VIPKID is a teaching job, not a sales job. There is no selling, no building a downline, etc. (Phew!)
That being said, VIPKID does reward bonuses when you refer another teacher and help them get hired and start teaching. They do this because they’re always looking for more good teachers and the best way to learn about VIPKID is to hear info directly from another teacher! (I asked my referring teacher SO many questions!)

Teaching English online isn’t for everyone, but I’m so glad I was brave and decided to give it a try. Teaching with VIPKID has turned out to be such a great side job for me as a SAHM and it’s been a great help for us financially!
