Only an aunt can give hugs like a mother, keep secrets like a sister and share love like a friend. – Unknown
I write about motherhood a lot here on the blog because it’s a big part of my life, but today I wanted to write about the aunts in my life. Because what would life be like without our wonderful aunts?
When I was little my family lived near my Aunt Kathleen. While I have many wonderful aunts, we all grew the closest to Aunt Kathleen. She babysat us kids countless times, sending my parents out for much needed dates. She had us over for special one-on-one times and gave us journals to record our memories. She planned special tea parties and put a lot of thought into special gifts for us kids. I remember lots of laughs shared and memories made, many more than I can share in this blog post.
Later on after my family moved across the country she traveled to attend high school competitions and graduations and eventually multiple weddings. What fun times we’ve had with her over the years and what a blessing she has been to our family! Now that I’ve grown up she’s not only my aunt but my friend as well and I’ve loved introducing her to my kiddos.
Pablo was also blessed with wonderful aunts in his life, and he grew up especially close to three of his aunts who lived together just a few houses down from his family’s. He was over at their home almost every single day as a child and still has such a wonderful relationship with them. They still live in that same home today and it’s always so fun to see them whenever we visit Pablo’s family. Their love for Pablo is so obvious, it’s really sweet to see.
When it comes to our kids they are quite blessed in the aunt department. I have seven sisters, plus two sister-in-laws! Add in Pablo’s two sisters and my kids have eleven aunts total (not counting all their great-aunts of course!)
My sisters have babysat my kids more times than I can count. They’ve joined us on little family getaways to give a helping hand with the kids and let us escape for a date night. They’ve picked up the kids when I really needed a break (thank you!!!!) They’re some of the kids’ biggest fans but also know how to keep them in line.
Pablo’s sisters stayed with us for several weeks shortly after Lucas was born and my kids had a blast with them! They played with the kids, cooked some meals, and just helped to calm the chaos that is life after a new baby is born.
My kids don’t realize how lucky they are to have so many great aunts!
Aunt: A cherished friend and personal cheerleader who will always see you through rose colored glasses. – Unknown
Aunts are an extra set of hands to help and ears to confide in.
Aunts love you no matter what because you’re family, but they’re also not afraid to tell you to behave because, well, you’re family.
Aunts think you’re pretty much the best (even when your parents have about had it with you!)
Aunts are your friends for life.
What would life be like without aunts? I’m not sure, but I’m sure glad I don’t have to find out!
