Happy Monday friends! It’s been way too long since my last book review and I’m sorry about that! I’m going to try to get my act together and do a better job with the book reviews, starting now. My plan going forward is to review a new book each month. I’m going to try really hard to stick to that and who knows, maybe I’ll surprise myself and do several reviews some month.
Anyway, this month’s review is of Walking with God in the Season of Motherhood by Melissa Kruger. This is an eleven-week Bible study/devotional but it’s taken me a good while longer because I don’t do it every day. In fact, I still have two weeks left, but having almost finished I feel that I have a good enough idea of the book to review it for you guys.
Here’s a little bit from the back cover:
In Walking with God in the Season of Motherhood, you’ll learn how to nourish your own heart, mind, and soul with the wisdom you need to become the mother you long to be…. Each week offers four days of study geared specifically to a mother’s concerns, with the Bible passages already printed out for your convenience. The fifth day is a warm-hearted devotional reading to help you reflect on and apply the truths you’ve learned.
So, what did I like about this book?
I loved that the Bible passages were printed in the book! That made it super convenient. I also appreciated all the questions following each passage; they helped me to think back through what I’d just read.
I appreciated that the main focus was placed on the Bible passages and not just the author’s own thoughts, unlike some devotionals I’ve seen that only include a verse or two and then several paragraphs from the author. That being said though, Mrs. Kruger’s commentary of the passages was excellent as well.
Here are a few quotes that stuck out to me:
We bless our families by spending time with Jesus.
Growing in our affection for Christ does not mean that we love our families less. Our love for others actually increases the more we love Christ.
The love of a mother tills the soil of the heart and makes it fertile ground for the gospel to take root.
While this devotional covered a lot of topics, it stressed to me throughout the importance of my role as a mom. I am the only mom my kids have. They’re stuck with me. 😉 God has put me in a position of great influence in their lives; am I being the example I ought to be? Am I pointing them towards Him?
A couple things to note about this devotional: first off, while anyone could benefit from it, it is written directly to moms and talks a lot about parenting. I think I may want to work through it again in several years because some of the questions will apply to me even more as my kids get older.
Also, Walking with God in the Season of Motherhood is not intended to be an extremely in-depth study so if that’s what you’re looking for then it probably isn’t for you.
If though you’re searching for God’s plan for you as a mom, trying harder to be consistent in your time with Him, or maybe even just struggling to find the time, this devotional is for you.
Check it out and let me know how you like it!
