As a stay-at-home mom, I’m always keeping my ears open for good side hustles that I can do from home. The internet is full of promising options, but in reality a lot of them are sketchy and really don’t pan out. It can be hard to know what is actually a legit side hustle and what isn’t!
Last year I read this article about how a fellow blogger made a couple hundred a month by working for Rev.com. I was instantly intrigued, and because the article was from a source I trusted I decided to check it out.
Maybe you’ve heard of Rev too and wondered hmmm, is Rev legit? Well, I tried it out and I’m here to share my experience. 🙂

The Basics
I applied on Rev.com as a transcriptionist. To be approved, you first have to take a grammar test, then complete a short transcription. I think my sample transcription was three or four minutes long. Don’t let that short time fool you though – those few minutes took me what seemed like forever to transcribe due to poor sound quality, overlapping voices, background noise, etc.
Thankfully though I got an email a few days later that I had been approved!
The next step before receiving my first job was completing Rev’s online training. I’m not sure how long it took me but not super long, and then I was eligible to start claiming jobs!
Rev has several levels:
- Rookie
- Revver
- Revver+
As a Rookie you are only eligible for shorter jobs and you get graded after you turn in a project. The pay is also pretty low.
I reached the middle level – Revver – pretty quickly (a week or two if I’m remembering correctly) and that’s where I still am because I haven’t had much time to spend on it lately. At the middle level you have a lot more jobs to pick from and are only graded occasionally. The pay ranges from 45 cents to 65 cents per transcribed minute.
If I had continued consistently working with Rev I would think I’d probably be in the top category by now, Revver+. Once you reach Revver+ you have access to the jobs before all the Revvers. This is huge because then you’re able to pick the easier jobs!
What I Love About Rev
- Reliable work
There are pretty much always multiple jobs available. When I logged in to check just now there were over 600 to choose from!!
- You get to choose your jobs
I love that you can claim a job and then if it’s not for you, you can unclaim it within an hour without a penalty. I’m pretty picky about the jobs that I’ll take because the sound quality on some is very poor and not worth my time
- No need to purchase anything (such as a pedal or special program)
Honestly the thought of purchasing something is what held me back from looking into other transcription work, so I love that all I need for Rev is my computer and earbuds.
- Reliable pay
Every week that I work I’m paid the following Monday through PayPal!
Three Things to Note about Rev
1. Working for Rev won’t make you rich
In other words, don’t quit your day job. 😉 But if you are looking for a side hustle, it’s a great way to make a little money during time that you wouldn’t be doing anything else anyway!
To give you a fair idea of the pay, at my typing speed (which is not too impressive haha) I often end up making around minimum wage ($7.25/hr here in TX.) I think that I could raise it to $10/hr if I worked regularly and advanced to the next level where you get first dibs on the new jobs.
2. You MUST have a quiet environment to work in
It’s impossible for me to work when my kids are up and running around. The audio is often poor so it really requires all of my attention and I need my kids to be asleep while I work.
3. Good typing skills are important
Being good with details is important as well!
So, in summary, working for Rev is hard work – and it won’t make you rich – but Rev IS legit and it’s reliable side hustle! Seeing your earnings drop into your PayPal account every Monday is very satisfying. 🙂
