Your house is a mess and you have company coming in 10 minutes? It’s time for a little speed cleaning! Here are my best tips for getting a clean house fast.
Hi friends!
Today’s post is for those of you who, like me, have at some point or another run through your home at a mad dash trying to get a semblance of a clean house fast before company arrives.
While I’d ideally keep my home company ready all the time, the reality is that that isn’t always the case – hence the frequent mad dashes to get things cleaned up quickly, ha!
So, when you find out that someone is going to stop by in ten minutes and your home is a mess, don’t have a panic attack. I’m here to share some of my favorite strategies for getting your home clean fast – in fact, you’ll be able to have it looking much cleaner in only 10 minutes!

I know you’re probably saying “Ok, how do I clean my whole house in just 10 minutes? I can’t clean my house that fast!”
Okay, so no it’s not possible to completely clean your house in 10 minutes but there are some quick and simple steps you can take to quickly get your home looking much cleaner and ready for last minute company.
6 Tips For a Clean House Fast
1. Wipe down the main bathroom
The first step to clean your house fast is to check the bathroom. The bathroom should be priority number one especially if a guest is stopping by because nothing makes a worse impression than a gross bathroom.
Quickly grab some disinfectant wipes and wipe off the sink and faucets, plus a quick wipe on and around the toilet. Make a habit of keeping disinfectant wipes handy under your bathroom sink so that they’re always there when you need to do a little speed cleaning.
2. Straighten up the obvious surfaces
A clean surface automatically makes everything look wayyy cleaner, so make sure to do a quick tidy up, especially of the more obvious surfaces.
My sister and I used to joke that our best cleaning strategy for surfaces was “the stacking method” where we would quickly tidy up surfaces by neatly stacking things. Now obviously just stacking everything isn’t the ideal way to clean your home, but when you only have 10 minutes to speed clean your home it’s a good quick strategy.
3. Use a laundry basket to collect out-of-place items
Since we’re just talking about a quick 10 minute cleaning of your home you won’t have time to put everything away, so that’s where a laundry basket comes in handy. Run through your main living areas and toss into the laundry basket anything that doesn’t belong.
You can store the laundry basket in an inconspicuous spot until you have a few more minutes to spare (or until your company leaves) and then take the time to put it all where it goes.

4. Make use of a storage ottoman or lidded basket
One of my favorite tips for getting a clean house fast is to have a nice storage ottoman or large lidded basket in your main living area. Did the kids leave a bunch of toys out? Toss them in the basket! Blankets strewn across the floor? Store them in the ottoman.
Hey, you can even throw random laundry or paper clutter in there too if you’re desperate. Sure, ideally you’re going to have a place for everything and everything in it’s place, but when you only have time for a quick house cleaning sometimes you just need a place to shove stuff. Just remember to sort things out later.
5. Utilize your dishwasher
Speaking of places to shove things, once you’ve tidied up your main living area by stacking things neatly on the surfaces and hiding other items in your lidded basket or ottoman, move onto the kitchen. Dishwashers are perfect for hiding dirty dishes – even the ones that you don’t actually plan to run through the dishwasher. Throw them all in there for now and your kitchen will look much cleaner.
6. Quickly sweep
Your 10 minutes are almost up, so quickly grab a broom and sweep up the most obviously messy spot in your home. For us – with four kids – that would be the dining room. It’s amazing how improved a room looks once it’s swept.
Okay, I said I had six tips, but here’s one more!
Bonus: Light a candle or start a diffuser
Oh, is your friend at the door already? Quick, light a candle or hit start on your diffuser! There’s nothing like a lovely clean scent to help a home feel even cleaner and more company ready.
