I love this time of year! Thanksgiving is coming up quickly and Christmas is just around the corner!
Awhile back I shared a list of some of the best Thanksgiving books for kids and today I’m back with a larger list of some of my favorite Christmas books for kids!
Whether you get all your Christmas books out at the beginning of the season or wrap them to open each day of Advent, having Christmas books to read as a family adds so much to the fun of the season.

Favorite Books for Kids About the First Christmas
1. The Christmas Story (little Golden Book)
I’ve always loved this classic re-telling of the first Christmas. The illustrations by Eloise Wilkin are beautiful!
2. The Christmas Story; from the gospels of Matthew and Luke – (Cathy Ann Johnson)
I picked this book up recently at our local Kid-to-Kid. I love that it uses Scripture to tell the story.
3. The Crippled Lamb – (Max Lucado)
This is a sweet story that I grew up reading.
4. Who Is Coming to Our House? – (Joseph Slate)
This is a nice, simple book for little ones.
5. Christmas in the Manger – (Nola Buck)
Another simple book for your littlest kiddos.
6. Song of the Stars: A Christmas Story (Sally Lloyd Jones)
I love this poetic telling of Christ’s birth, though since it is poetic I think I enjoy it more than more than my kids do.
7. Why Christmas? – Barbara Reaoch
This is a devotional-type book that teaches your kids about the true meaning of Christmas. Perfect for Advent!

8. How the Grinch Stole Christmas – (Dr. Suess)
How did I not read this book growing up?! This is now one of our favorite Christmas books. It teaches such a great lesson about the real meaning of Christmas.
9. Good King Wenceslas – (John Neal and Tim L.)
As a child I loved the story of King Wenceslas and it’s cool that it’s based on something that really happened back in the 10th century!
10. The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey – (Susan W.)
A heartwarming story with really lovely illustrations!
11. Bialosky’s Christmas – (Leslie McGuire)
This book is a bit hard to find but I had luck over at Thrift Books. We love Bialosky and my kids really enjoy this fun story.
12. The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree – (Gloria Houston)
I love the illustrations in this one!
13. The Legend of St. Nicholas: A Story of Christmas Giving – (Dandi Daley Mackall)
I like the idea of teaching my kids about the real Santa, St. Nicholas.
14. The Nutcracker
Such a classic! I couldn’t find our copy online but this version is beautiful.
15. The Legend of the Candy Cane – (Lori Walburg)
I love the illustrations in this book and how the story points back to how Jesus died for us.
16. God Gave Us Christmas – (Lisa Tawn Bergren)
This is a sweet book that answers the question “who invented Christmas?” and more.
17. Carl’s Christmas – (Alexandra Day)
If you’re not familiar with Carl books, they are mostly gorgeous pictures with little (if any) text. My kids and I love them, especially this Christmas one.
18. Construction Site on Christmas Night – (Sherri Dusky Rinker)
This one’s on our wish list because what kid doesn’t like the Construction Site books?
19. The Family Read-Aloud Christmas Treasury
This Christmas treasury is full of poems and stories that are sure to get your whole family in the Christmas spirit!
20. A Charlie Brown Christmas – (Charles Schulz)
A Charlie Brown Christmas is a classic!
21. Mortimer’s Christmas Manger – (Karma Wilson)
My kids enjoy this cute story about a mouse and a nativity scene.
22. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer – (Robert May)
There are of course many different versions and editions of this story but we especially enjoy our copy, pictured below.
23. Santa’s Toy Shop (Little Golden Book)
Our family doesn’t make a big deal about Santa at Christmas but my kids still enjoy fun books about him. The illustrations in this classic Little Golden Book are so cute!
24. Frosty the Snowman
Frosty the Snowman is a wintertime classic and we love our vintage copy of this book!
25. Bear Stays Up For Christmas – (Karma Wilson)
Another favorite with my kids that we read every year.
