Do you feel like you’re killing your grocery budget with all the snacks your family needs? Try some of these easy and cheap homemade snack ideas!
The more kids I have – and the older they get – the faster we go through snacks. While I try to limit snacks to specific times of the day (10 am and 3pm normally) I’m still amazed at how fast we can eat through our supply.
I like to save money on groceries and live frugally when possible, so I love finding easy and cheap snacks that I can make at home. Having a variety of options for homemade snacks definitely helps me to avoid overspending at the grocery store. (That is not to say that I never buy snacks, not at all, but I love doing homemade when I can!)
So, what easy snacks can you make at home for cheap? Here are some of my favorite ideas.

5 Easy and Cheap Homemade Snack Ideas
1. Energy Bites
My kids and I are big fans of these no bake five ingredient energy bites. They only call for 5 ingredients (oats, peanut butter, coconut flakes, honey, and chocolate chips) and are super easy to mix up and have on hand in the fridge. The only problem? You may find it hard to stop eating them!
2. Muffins (for the win!)
Who doesn’t love muffins? There are so many great recipes out there and you can switch things up with a mini muffin tin or fun mini loaf pans too.
Here are my very favorite muffins to make for snacks (all kid-approved of course!)
- Basic Muffins
- Sweet Potato Muffins
- Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins
- Blueberry Oatmeal Muffins
- Sweet Spinach Muffins
3. Homemade Yogurt
Yogurt is such a great, good-for-you snack, but it can get pretty pricey, especially if you’re buying the good stuff. So, a great solution is to make your own! I love to make yogurt in the crockpot. If you strain your homemade yogurt through cheesecloth you’ll end up with your own Greek-style yogurt for a fraction of the cost.
It takes a bit of trial and error but I promise you that you’ll get hooked on homemade yogurt. Store-bought just can’t compare in my opinion!
4. Simple Popsicles
Popsicles are nice, cheap homemade snack option and they only take a minute or so of prep (plus some freezing time of course!)
Here are 3 easy homemade popsicle options:
-
Juice popsicles – Just freeze juice in popsicle molds like these.
-
Yogurt popsicles – These are super cheap to make if you’re using homemade yogurt!
-
Banana popsicles – Just stick a popsicle stick in half of a banana and freeze. We ate these all the time as kids and loved them!
5. Spiral-cut Apples and Dip
Okay, this isn’t a homemade snack recipe per se but hear me out. Apples are a staple snack in our home, but when the kids get a little bored with them it’s fun to make them exciting by using one of these cool gadgets.
My kids love to eat their spiral-cut apples and it adds a bit of novelty to a super basic snack.
Throw together an easy apple dip like this one and you have a super special, homemade snack!
