Hmm . . . where to even start with this review of The Lucky Few . . .
This book is a must read.
My mom lent me The Lucky Few and it sat on my bookshelf for at least a month before I got around to starting it. Once I finally started though I had a hard time putting it down, which rarely happens for me with a non-fiction book.
Also, pretty sure I teared up every single time I read it which is also rare for me.
Here’s a brief synopsis from the book’s back cover:
When Heather and Josh Avis decided to grow their family, adoption and Down syndrome were never in their plans. Yet after adopting three children, two of whom have Down syndrome, they quickly discovered that God’s best for their life would be found in the most unlikely places, and how lucky they were to have journeyed there.
In The Lucky Few, Heather takes you on a journey of faith. As she shares her family’s story and how they met each of their children, you will be blessed by Heather and her husband Josh’s hearts for the Lord and commitment to following His plan for them. Because God’s plans for us, though not always “normal” or easy, are always best.
This book was especially dear to me since I have a brother with Down syndrome. Heather was right when she said that having a Down Syndrome child in your family puts you in a special club. It really does.
Her message about the worth of these precious children is especially important in our day where we see articles like a recent one by CBS that announced the near “elimination” of Down syndrome in Iceland due to abortion.
The Lucky Few is all about adoption and I loved learning more about it, especially since I’d just finished Strong and Kind, which also touches some on adoption. It really made me think: would I be open to adoption or fostering if God lead us in that direction at some point? It’s honestly a little scary for me to think about, but I want to be willing!
I’ll finish up this review with a quote from the last page of the book – read it, and then run and get yourself a copy of this book! Or just click any of my links in this post to purchase it from Amazon. 😉
Here’s the quote:
I think about how lucky all of us are when we finally allow God to gently push us toward the places where he’s waiting to be discovered. Not a whole lot of us choose to leave that path of easy, normal, and nice, the one covered in rose petals and lined with solar-powered lamps. But for those of us who do, we really and truly are the lucky few.
